CorePlayer – Some Legitimate Concerns

Our friend Solsie has a good post up today expressing some genuine concerns about issues and initial shortcomings he has hit upon in using the new CorePlayer release.

Our man Dgoldring, who recently did an excellent CorePlayer review here, is traveling today – but I expect he may have some thoughts on some of Solsie’s points.

OK. I am on vacation in South Carolina, and don’t have my editing tools set up. So, I’ll just post a few thoughts here in the comments.

It is true that there is currently no trial version of CorePlayer. In several weeks, there is a plan to release CorePlayer Free which will be a trial version. I’m not sure why they did it this way or why they didn’t release CorePlayer Free simultaneously. They also plan to release a new free BetaPlayer, which will be an updated version of TCPMP. The release date is December 4 for BetaPlayer.

Unfortunately, I do have to note that the release did not go as smoothly as planned. There were some problems with the site and with Handango which caused a severak hour delay in the release. Also, this caused the advertised price to raise from $19.99 to $24.99. They did get coupons out later, but many people had already purchased the program by then. In my opinion, CorePlayer would do a great service to its fans if it offered a $5.00 discount to those who purchased early.

There was also some confusion about some of the services. CorePlayer was a very ambitious program. Also, it is being released in stages with the media player released now and the “social networking” portions released in the coming months. I’m not sure that this was a good idea, but this is the way they chose to do it.

CoreCodec could have done a much better job of advertisising and explaining some of these features.

All of this being said, ny conclusion is that CorePlayer, as a media player, is still among the best out there. Is there room for improvement?? Of course. There almost always is room for refinement. Especially in a project as ambitions as this one. Do I agree with everything CoreCodec did and how they did it? No, I think they could have and maybe should have done things differently. But then, ask me if I agree with my wife all the time either?? :) I think it is a good project and I am anxious to see the improvements that will come in the next six months.
