Apple store opens on 29th Street in Boulder, CO

Normally I’m not one to go to grand openings for stores, but in this case I had to make an exception. Why? Well first off the new store at 29th St. in Boulder is on a whole new site where they’ve destroyed the mall I knew as a kid and I wanted to see what the site looks like. And second … I’ve got to welcome a store that "Thinks Different" into a city that itself "Thinks Different". If anyone reading this has ever been to the city of Boulder, CO you know exactly what I mean.
The other thing that made me go was I decided that I wanted to support Apple in what I think is the best decision (besides moving to x86) that they’ve made in a long time. Apple having self controlled retail stores is a great way to get them a bigger market share, more public visibility, and you can’t beat having local customer support (unlike some companies… cough cough India Dell). I’ve got 3 Apple stores within 45 minutes of my house now … and I couldn’t be happier. Now, when my Macbook needs a little extra attention I have choices.
Anyway, I’m very happy to report that I got my free T-shirt, and that the store met all of my expectations. True to Apple form the store is sleeky & sexy, fully staffed and has more room in it that you could possibly imagine. Easily the biggest of the three stores here in the Denver area. If you’re in the area, I definitely recommend stopping by!!!
And in the interest of keeping this on topic with our mobile lives – I made sure to play with the new and improved version 2 iPod Nano. I’m in love. Although I honestly got the feeling that it wasn’t the Nano anymore. If I wasn’t an iPod "fan" and didn’t know anything about iPod having released the new and improved version I would have swore this was just a newer version of the Mini. But as I said, I love it. The screen looks a tad better, the controls are still very nice to use and you just can’t beat the size/weight. Love IT! I’d post an image of the red one on my list of gadgets to buy … but the camera on my 8125 is poop.

netsyd,
Hey, I was there as well driving through there twice on Friday. I’m sure the folks in Boulder are glad to have that with all the sales tax revenue bleeding out to Flatirons Mall in Broomfield. That outdoor main street portion of 29th Street is something cool to look at, I think I like it better than Belmar’s outdoor street sections.
The thing with me is that I’ve vowed never to own an iPod, so I have no interest in ever setting foot inside an Apple store.

Honestly, I thought I would never “need” to step foot inside an Apple store either, although I do own a pair of iPods that I bought on Ebay… but I like thier stores. I own a Macbook as well, so for me it’s nice to have Apple locally for if/when something goes wrong and more importantly than that … they have everything out on display for you to try out before you buy. They don’t do high pressure sales within the stores which makes the “test drive” even better.
It’s important for me to be able to try things out before I buy them, I get easily annoyed with tech devices that do something stupid, and most times I can decide within 5 minutes of using something if I’m going to like it or not. I used my Macbook for about 10 minutes in the store at Flatirons and bought it immediately thereafter. I still love it, and despite the one issue I’ve had with it, I wouldn’t part with it right now unless Apple did something major to make me NEED to trade it.
Anyway, you’re right. I’m sure Boulder is very happy to have these new shops opening up. Crossroads mall was taken down a long time ago, and since Flatirons has been the mall of shoice for the area. Bringing back all the tax revenue will be a big boost… but I wonder how much since a good portion of the tech sector works 2 minutes from Flatirons. Heck I work 5 minutes from Flatirons, so you won’t see me at the Boulder Apple store much!!!

I’m just perhaps anti-iPod because of the “trendiness” about it, plus I think I get more out of my x51v for the money. Although the U2 iPod, being a U2 fan has been a consideration. The other thing is that I’ve always felt that Apple products tout form over function at a high price.
Living in Fort Collins, I was actually down there for a job interview and had time to drive around Boulder (and during the interview process, was driven around to see redevelopment). I’m a civil/transportation engineer — seeing how communities deal with growth and redevelopment is an interest of mine. If I get the job offer, the trick is going to be where I can find cheap(er) housing in/around Boulder. Longmont seems to be the most viable — I was surprised with how high Broomfield, Lafayette and Louisville seems (already knowing about Boulder).

Yea – good luck finding a cheap(er) place to live. I live out by DIA simply because its so much cheaper.
Good luck with the job – hope you get it!!!

Wow, you commute from DIA to Broomfield? You happen to make up for the cheaper home by the longer commute and E-470 toll money? Glad to know you got a music player for the commute.
Thanks for good luck wishes. I’m optimistic that I got it.

Not really …
I moved out there a couple years ago when I was working in Louisville, before E-470 was completed. We figure we saved about 70k compared to what we could have spent in say Erie for the same sq footage. Honestly the commute isn’t all the bad (about 25 miles), and I don’t use E-470 simply because it costs way too much. I think within the next few years we’ll end up over the west side anyway… but the house out by DIA was our first and we couldn’t be happier with it.
