afarre’s ‘Aximized’ Carputer – Awesome

afarre, an Aximsite member based in Cadiz, Spain, has posted an incredible video of his home-made ‘Carputer’ – using his own ‘Aximizer’ and lots of other components to yield this set of features:

  1. Bluetooth GPS Navigation
  2. Fast tap Bluetooth dialing.
  3. Music
  4. Movies (not for the driver of course)
  5. Online car diagnostics.

He also has a superb set of posts up detailing and showing the build process for his customized Axim jacket that provides:

  1. VGA out
  2. Serial port with circuit for TTL to RS232 signals conversion.
  3. Car charger
  4. Input for 5v Dell power supply (includes protection against connecting 12v and 5v at a time)
  5. PDA USB client connector.
  6. USB HUB x4 (powered when applying 5v or 12v)
  7. Audio preamplifier with double format output (RCA and mini-jack connectors)

As many have pointed out in the Aximsite thread on this, there are probably easier ways to achieve most of this (UMPC car-mounted and so on) – but I don’t think you can fail to applaud the ingenuity and hard work on this one.

For more details on the design and build process, see afarre’s posts at Aximsite – just search for Aximizer or Carputer. And check out the video below:

Now I am investigating to add a USB webcam as rear camera and a Radar Detector integrated with PDA via serial port.

I am also thinking about adding TVout to Aximizer, so that it can be used not only on TV set but also on non VGA car displays.
