Steve did a post a while back on the very interesting Onyx concept from Synaptics – where a device, in this case a concept phone, is powered purely by touch, proximity and gesture – with no hardware buttons / scroll wheels etc on the device itself.

Slashgear has a set of videos up showing this off very nicely on a concept phone – demo-ing dragging a contact straight from Calendar onto a GPS app and seeing their real-time location, adjusting volume on-screen with an onscreen scrollwheel, and Drag & Drop playlist creation.
