StyleTap 1.0 Released

Posted by: PatrickJ on Oct 31 2006 - 947 views

Via: Aximsite

StyleTap 1.0 has now been released - after a lengthy public beta. StyleTap allows you to run applications and games originally written for Palm OS on a Windows Mobile device.

I can’t think of many instances where you couldn’t find an equivalent ‘native’ Windows Mobile app that would fit the bill - but I’ve only used a Palm (Treo) device for a relatively short time.  And I know there are a lot of hardcore Palm users who’ve recently moved to a Windows Mobile device, who will have StyleTap on their Must Have programs list.

Thanks to Akheron at Aximsite for the heads-up on this release.

Spb Pocket PC Survey

Posted by: Brandon Steili on Oct 31 2006 - 668 views

Take the survey - get 5 free ringtones

It’s that time again - Spb wants your opinions on the questions they love to ask. This survey isn’t just about getting Spb your complaints or your praises - it’s about making the mobile market and user community even better. I personally love Spb’s products and I think they do an excellent job of trying to bring a good product to market while at the same time meeting as many user needs as they can, so you can bet I am happy to participate in their survey.

Anyway - stop on by - fill out the survey (litterally less than 5 minutes) and grab your free ringtones!!!

HTC To Provide a Windows Mobile CLOSE Function

Posted by: PatrickJ on Oct 31 2006 - 915 views

Via: Modaco.com

Modaco is reporting that HTC has decided to take matters into their own hands - where Microsoft hasn’t so far - and include a task manager application in future device builds, that will allow users to have a ‘real’ close button within programs.

Apparently this will be featuring in all HTC Pocket PCs shipping with AKU 3.2 onwards.

This will be great news for lots of frustrated Windows Mobile users, who have cried out for this feature for years. Most of us have just gone with a 3rd party task manager to achieve this on our devices - and there are lots of good ones out there.

Nice move by HTC.

WorldMate To Be Pre-Installed on iPAQ Travel Companion

Posted by: PatrickJ on Oct 30 2006 - 847 views

MobiMate Ltd. announced today that its WorldMate Standard Edition 2006, an industry leading mobile travel service, will be pre-installed in the HP iPAQ rx5000 Travel Companion. WorldMate provides portable devices with highly relevant and helpful travel content to make travels easier and more enjoyable.

WorldMate 2006 Standard Edition provides a host of travel related services such as weather forecasts, daily currency exchange rates, measurement converters, world clocks, and more. The program will be pre-installed on the HP iPAQ rx5000 series and ready to go right out of the box. Customers will have the option to upgrade to WorldMate Professional Edition 2006, which provides several enhancements including flight schedules for over 800 airlines, real-time flight status, and enhanced weather services.

I like the idea of moving towards more pre-installed programs on mobile devices, especially if they are amongst the leaders in a category that’s particularly relevant to an individual device. This helps users more quickly appreciate and make use of the power of their mobile device for a broad range of different purposes.

If you’re billing a device as a ‘travel companion’ it absolutely makes sense to include a leading travel-related application pre-installed on it - and leave less onus on users to fend for themselves in finding useful programs.
