Zune Accessories – Suggestions Wanted By MS Team

Source: Gizmodo

"I’m the 3rd party accessories guy.  If you saw the press release today, I’m the one interfacing with the partners to build an ecosystem of devices that support Zune." - Bill Wittress / Zune Insider blog

The Zune Guy blog is asking for suggestions on what accessories we’d like to see for Zune:

"The one problem with my job is that I can’t talk about specific products any one partner is building.  However, I can ask you guys what you’d like to see (and then maybe have it built).  So, send me your best ideas.  I’ll post the most interesting ones and then vet them with the partners."

It’s nice to see that quite a few Zune Team blog sites have sprung up ever since Zune was officially announced, and these guys could start talking about what they’ve been working on. I’m a big fan of a lot of MS Team blogs, including the MS Exchange team and Windows Mobile Team blogs. From what I’ve seen so far, it looks like the Zune team are also going to do an excellent job in this area.

Ok … forgive me for being the “cup is half empty because it spilled all over my lap and was filled with blazing hot McDonald’s Coffee” kind of person but doesn’t this scream:

We Don’t have a frikin clue what we are doing in this market and we really have no idea what this generation wants…. so PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS HOLY HELP US!!!!

Seriously, I like the fact that they are reaching out to the community and asking for suggestions (knock knock Apple), but if you don’t know what your spiffy new product should have along with it, you should have stuck with xBoxes.

But since they asked:

How about no DRM? Oh wait that’s not an accessory. How about a better name? Nope not an accessory. Darn, this is harder than it looks… I guess they had problems figuring it out too.

Hey here’s a few thoughts:

FM-Mod – This should be top priority (next to pink cases that clip onto purses and ones with leopard print.)

Cases – not to state the obvious.

Ipod Adapter / converter so that the Zune can replace/adapt to all the adapters on the market that were made for cars, trucks and what not. If you want to knock iPod off the top, you need to be able to easily replace it in every existing installation. BMW’s come with the adapter for iPod’s… the Zune needs to be able to just plug in and go without any modifications.

Work calls … I could keep the ideas going all day long but Microsoft has called me about a job yet LOL

Wow – and LOL nice thoughts. No DRM would garner just a few votes I reckon. But … No, I don’t think it screams that they haven’t got a clue (they being your future employers of course). I think *the* big selling point of Zune so far is the wireless / sharing abilities – and I think that is a great feature and shows a LOT of possession of clues. As for accessories, I think their recent announcements indicated that there are already tons in the works – so I don’t think this says ‘we have none, tell us what to do’, it just says that this is how a whole lot of product development gets (at least partially) influenced these days – look at all the Windows Mobile developers that most of us like the best – they listen to and continually *ask* their users what they want, what’s missing and so on. I’m still betting that the X-Box guys and others on the Zune team do have a lot of clues and will probably succeed …

Ha – nice – keep the phone lines open. Up at this hour = no good excuse – always up late, tonight playing with the new iLauncher, looking for some SmartSkey tweaks, defending those Underdog Microsoft guys ….
