New (and Free) Mobile Network Analyzer Powertoy

Here’s another nice little free utility from Microsoft – the Windows Mobile Network Analyzer Powertoy.

It’s free, supports Windows Mobile Pocket PC and Smartphone editions, and can work with *all* network connection types – GPRS, wireless, Activesync etc.

Read on for some more detail and a download link …

Here’s the overview piece at the MS download site:

Network Analyzer for Windows Mobile runs network utilities, for example ping and ipconfig, on a Windows Mobile powered device. Network Analyzer for Windows Mobile facilitates the troubleshooting of network connectivity issues. You can extend the harness. You can add user-defined tests (DLLs) to the list of tests to be executed. An xml input file defines the list of tests to execute. You can use Network Analyzer to send information about network traffic to a .cap file. You can then view the .cap file with the Network Monitor tool or the Ethereal tool.

When you run it, you get a nice little bit of acceptable use text that you need to accept, essentially saying that you’ll only use it for legitimate, troubleshooting purposes on your own network, or one on which you have permission to use it.

One very cool feature of this utility is that it supports user-added DLL’s for enhancing/extending these tests with your own tests.

Sounds like a coll little utility. I couldn’t help noticing on the MS site, though, that it only runs on WM 5, not WM 2003 SE. :( Guess I will not be downloading it.

Yeah – should’ve mentioned that in the post – it does appear to be WM5 only …
