SslChainSaver – Windows Mobile Certificates Help

Here’s a tool that should make a lot of Windows Mobile users – and IT admins – very happy.

Installation of certificates on WM5 devices, and making them work with Exchange servers, has been a huge source of headaches for many when trying to setup sync to Exchange. This new tool – published on The Windows Mobile Team Blog – should prove a big help in troubleshooting and resolving a lot of these issues.

SslChainSaver is a tool that will make an SSL connection to another machine and write out the certificate
chain in a format that can be installed on a Windows Mobile device.
It connects to a server over SSL and writes out certificate XML containing the chain for the server. This XML can be installed on a Windows Mobile
device so that it can connect to the server over SSL. (for Exchange sync, or other purposes).

The Windows Mobile Team Blog page also has some links to good (and concise) articles on some of the common SSL certificate chain issues that created the need for this tool, and on how to add root certs via a .cab file.  This blog site is always a great technical reference and troubleshooting resource.

Thanks to Jon Westfall at PocketPCThoughts for the posting on this tool.
