A Fresh Look at HolidayDB/Maker (for PalmOS)

With HolidayDB/Maker, you can store all your holiday and anniversary dates in one place that can be exported to your Palm Calendar or a HolidayDB database. This provides a convenient, single-point view of all your holidays, something that is not available with the in-built Palm Calendar application.

Sure, there are several similar shareware programs available for your palm that have more extensive features and prettier (inter)faces, but I like the HolidayDB/Maker for its simplicity and small footprint.

HolidayDB/Maker has support for yearly dates, lunar dates and dates relative to Easter. Further, you can specify number of days prior to and post any day that you choose. All this needs to be entered in textual form with the in-built text editor: this may not be to everybody’s liking. You do need to read the user manual – some 20 odd lines – for the exact formatting rules. Moving right along, the entire list can be exported to the palm calendar by pressing a button. Before exporting, you can select the period (from year, to year) you want to populate and also the category label and icon for exported days. Another button removes all entered items from the calendar in a reliable manner. It’s that simple.

There are some limitations though; for example, you can only select one category for all the days entered into the calendar. I would have prefered individual selection for each anniversary day, with a default setting for the rest. Each holiday is entered as an separate entry into the calendar for each year and there is no support for repeating holidays, but this is not a serious limitation. Oh yes, the inbuilt editor has no support for the Treo 5-way, betraying its age.

But it does what it is designed for in the most unobtrusive and dignified manner, and for that, it deserves a second look.

In case you decide to try it out, just remember that the dates are entered in the format set in your Palm preferences and not the way it is shown in the user manual (M/D/Y). I mention this as I almost dumped the program when I faced problems because of this.
