iLane – Hands Free In-Car Email

iLane logo

"With iLane™, you don’t have to take your eyes off the road, or your
hands off the steering wheel to check your handheld device for new
messages."

iLane is announcing the ‘world’s first hands-free and eyes-free email solution for in-vehicle use’. It’s not launched yet, but apparently coming soon.

This seems a good idea, particularly for those whose work keeps them in their car for long blocks of time. The system will read mail messages aloud, and allows you to manage incoming mail, SMS messages, calls, and calendar appointments – all hands-free. It will also accept voice commands to take actions on the messages and items it manages – reply, forward, and more.

Compatibility:

iLane™ is compatible with Bluetooth® enabled BlackBerry®
handheld devices running the BlackBerry® OS 4.0 and up. iLane™ will also support Bluetooth® enabled
handheld devices and smart-phones that run on the Palm® OS,
Windows Mobile® OS and Symbian OS™.

It’s also compatible with Bluetooth enabled in-car audio systems, and with a range of Bluetooth headsets.

According to a Virginia Tech study just looking at an object in the car, like a radio/phone/PDA, increases your risk of an accident 3.7 times the norm.

I guess if the option is “hands free email” or “email by hand while driving”, hands free is better, but maybe folks should just get a book on tape and save the email for when they are parked.

Ha – probably true that all of us are too obsessed with email and IM and all the rest while we’re on the go. Listening to a good book (or even a podcast) would not do us any harm once in a while. But I do think if you’ve got to be doing it, far better to be using voice commands than to be fiddling with a device with one hand, trying to find a contact to call or send mail to …
