UMPCs 40% Smaller with New Chipset?

Q1 pic

InfoWorld.com is reporting that Via Technologies has released a new chipset that could lead to as much as a 40% reduction in UMPC sizes, and the chipset should be available in mass quantities this quarter.

The new VX700 chipset is also supposed to reduce power consumption and improve battery life for these devices.

Limited battery life seems to be one of the biggest knocks on some of the first UMPCs released. So will a smaller form factor and boosted battery life help generate more momentum for Ultra Mobile PCs?

For more details, see the InfoWorld article, and Via Technologies’ overview page on the new chipset and its features.

I sure think it’s possible. The only thing now is how well will it perform? Will the 40% smaller also mean a 40% smaller screen? If so, will it be UX 180p tiny resolution horror all over again?

Yet to be seen…
