"Webaroo is a free software program and service that lets you search and browse real web pages without a connection. Webaroo’s advanced technology makes it simple for you to take the web with you — and find what you are looking for anywhere, anytime. It’s easy — Webaroo stores searchable web content on your laptop, PDA or smart phone."

I’ve been trying out Webaroo a little over the last week or so. Here’s some quick impressions of using it on a couple of mobile devices:

  • It recognizes SD cards easily on the devices and syncs content to them through a simple-to-use GUI
  • On mobile devices, it is pretty resource intensive. It performs well and quickly on my Axim X51V, but quite poorly on a Cingular 8125, with its slower processor and less available memory.
  • You need to put some effort into looking through the sites you want to keep offline, and see where the information you want resides, as the links in Webaroo currently only go one deep. So, for instance, if all the best Exchange How To articles are listed as single links off an /ExchangeTips page, you need to enter that URL when adding the site to Webaroo, rather than the top-level home page.

I would not plan to run this on the 8125, as it seems too resource hungry and affected overall performance too much. On the Axim though, I think I will find this a very useful tool. I did a site visit recently where I knew there was an older model firewall that I’d never heard of, and nobody at the site knew login details for it. Webaroo allowed me to search a Default Passwords site offline and find the login details needed.
