Today I Love My Device Because …

the new ROM update for the Cingular 8125 is solid and excellent so far.

This is Cingular’s long-awaited MSFP (Messaging & Security Features Pack) update for their HTC Wizard device. The MSFP (along with Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2) brings new and exciting features like direct push email and several security and device management enhancements, such as a remote device wipe capability.
I updated the ROM on my 8125 five days ago, and it’s been superb and well worth waiting for. Direct push email really does rock – watching mail hit the 8125 before it even hits my Outlook Inbox is very impressive. The update has caused me *zero* problems so far, and has already brought several major benefits:

  • Direct push email, without any noticeable dent in battery life. I’m using direct push during peak hours (7:45am – 5:30pm) and then manually syncing off-peak – battery life seems as good or better than before the update.
  • Better program memory management – the device now seems far better at getting memory resources back when applications are closed, and is consistently showing more available program memory when running several power apps concurrently.
  • Faster Pocket IE browsing – page load times are noticeably quicker in PIE since running the update.
